A lot of people assume wearing sunscreen is only needed at certain times like when the sun is out, or if they want to get a tan. But, that’s far from the truth since wearing sunscreen everyday, 365 days a year is beneficial for your skin and health.
Why should you wear sunscreen everyday?
People don’t realize that each day that you don't wear sunscreen you are exposed to the sun's harmful rays. Anyone who is over 6 months old should wear sunscreen everyday because the moment you step out you are exposed to sun exposure and its harmful effects. Sun protection is necessary, even if you aren’t going to be lounging by the pool or at the beach. Even simple running errands can expose you to a decent amount of sun. Can you believe that indoor lights can harm our skin and expose us to sun damage too.“The fluorescent lights in our offices even produce some ultraviolet light”, this is why wearing daily sunscreen is important.” notes Dr. Piliang. It’s recommended to apply sunscreen on the rest of your body and not just your face. For example, if you are wearing short sleeves and shorts on a sunny day, it’s highly recommended to apply sunscreen to both your face and your arms and legs to reduce the risk of sun exposure.
What kind of sunscreen should you wear everyday?
You should wear sunscreen that has at least an 15 SPF to have minimum sun protection. But, researchers and doctors recommend using a sunscreen with at least an 30 SPF for sunny days. If you wear makeup everyday there are certain products that have sunscreen within them. For example, some well known makeups that have sunscreens in their products are elf, NARS, Rare Beauty, L’oreal Paris and many more. The downside is the sun protection in the makeup may not be enough, so make sure to use an actual sunscreen to enhance your protection fully. The makeup that contains sunscreen should only be used on your face. Therefore, it’s recommended to use regular sunscreen for the rest of your body.
What are the benefits of wearing sunscreen?
Prevents sunburn- Use of sunscreen prevents sunburn since sunscreen blocks UVB rays which can cause most sunburns. It’s also important to wear sunscreen on cloudy days as well since the UVB rays can also penetrate through clouds, so there is a chance you can still get a sunburn on a cloudy day.
Lowers the risk of skin cancer- Use of sunscreen lowers the risk of skin cancer since too much UV exposure can damage the DNA inside the skin cells. By wearing sunscreen, it blocks the UV exposure and prevents sun damage
Protects skin from aging- Use of sunscreen protects skin from aging because if you don’t wear sunscreen, over time UV light damage can lead to wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging skin. By wearing sunscreen everyday, you can protect your skin from getting UV light damage.
Prevents certain skin conditions from flaring- A lot of skin conditions such as cutaneous and rosacea can worsen even from just a little bit of unprotected sun exposure. But, by wearing sunscreen you can help protect against these reactions.
Overall, by wearing sunscreen everyday, you can help protect your body from sun exposure and other skin conditions. Wearing sunscreen everyday can be beneficial to your health.
